Ear, nose, and throat infections are uncomfortable and very unpleasant. Mostly these infections are caused by common viruses but sometimes signs can be an indicator of a more serious ear, nose, and throat disease.  ANP Pharma can offer advice and a range of ear, nose, and throat infection treatments including over-the-counter and prescription medications.

Ear, nose, and throat disease

Ear, nose, and throat infections are rarely serious but they can be uncomfortable and painful particularly in small children and the elderly. The ears, nose, and throat are all inter-connected with a variety of different passageways in the skull; an infection in one location can rapidly spread to another.

Ear, nose, and throat infection treatment is often very similar, antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection (not viral) and supporting medication like Paracetamol or Calpol for children to ease pain and fever.

Ear infections

Ear infections are very common in infants and small children and can be horribly painful. Ear infections commonly present with these symptoms:-

  • Pain in the ear, usually sharp
  • Fever or a raised temperature
  • Ear discharge
  • Impaired hearing or a blocked ear

Ear infections are rarely serious although if they remain untreated then the infection can spread and cause complications like permanent deafness. Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics but viral infections are left to run their course with supportive medication to relieve symptoms.

Nose infections

The most common nose infections are rhinitis and sinus infections often called sinusitis. These infections can present with the following symptoms:

  • Mild fever
  • Nasal discharge and/or nasal obstruction
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarse voice
  • An accompanying ear infection which can be acute

Treatment is aimed at relieving the symptoms with inhalers and nose sprays plus reducing pain and fever with anti-inflammatories. Infections that are bacterial will be treated with antibiotics.

Throat infection

Throat infections can be either viral or bacterial and sometimes involve the tonsils. Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose or cold
  • Cough
  • Hoarse voice or change of voice
  • Earache

Viral throat infections will resolve without medication but bacterial throat infections will get worse unless they are treated with antibiotics.
